About

About Daquan Wright

I am a computer science student of Essex County College (Newark, NJ); I’m also a freelance user interface designer and application developer. I’ve been dabbling in Photoshop and HTML/CSS since 2004, and decided I like it so much I want to specialize in it (hence choosing CS as my major).

I currently reside in Newark, New Jersey and work from home with a custom built desktop (4gigs DDR3 G.Skill memory, tri-core AMD Athlon II 3.0GHz cpu, Radeon HD 5570 gpu, and a budget gigabyte motherboard).

Hobbies

Researching web-oriented technologies and putting them into practice; I also follow Linus Tech Tips and 3DGameMan to follow upcoming hardware (gotta love my custom desktop!). I also partake in self-learning mathematics, exercising, continually refining and growing my skillset, wireframing user interfaces in my graphing notebook, laughing with friends and family over various subjects, and connecting with like minded people in my industry.

Things That Fascinate Me

Gaming

I’ve been an enthusiastic gamer since I was about five or so. I’ve played dozens of great games on various platforms and they really inspire my work and sometimes ways of thinking. Games are a great way to get away from the real world and dive deep into universes and characters that you would otherwise never dream of.

Anime

I picked up Japanese animation a few years after gaming but nevertheless, this mesmerizing medium has taken me (and many others) by storm. My personal preferences for anime are that it be hand drawn cel animation, even though many new series are using computer graphics imagery; of course the latter seems to be a business move but it certainly doesn’t have the charm of traditional animation techniques. Intricate plots with well portrayed characters are also elements I look for.

I’m also fond of Disney’s The Lion King for its incredible story telling, musical direction, and compelling characters with various flaws and setbacks. There are a few other American cartoons I enjoy, such as King Of The Hill and various cartoon series I’ve seen on television over the years growing up.

Technologies I Use In My Work

My languages of choice are HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, MooTools (awesome object-oriented JS framework), PHP (my server-side language of choice), MySQL, SQL, WordPress, and CoreCommerce.

What fascinates me about the environment of the web is its diversity of practical applications; the web is constructed based on several layers of complimentary technologies. Websites and applications are a marriage of technologies, each one is a gear that turns another. Just as when a building is being built, the components must fit together in a meaningful way for it to last and be a work of art.

HTML = The structure / CSS = The style / JavaScript = user interaction

MySQL + PHP = the storage and retrieval of data, as well as serving that data (which is all of what makes it dynamic!)

WordPress is my content management system of choice because it’s simple, elegant, and clients can easily learn it. CoreCommerce is the platform I’m currently using for e-commerce solutions.
